Cold solderjoint - Ethernet/Southbridge

1 red lights

Details
Primary Error code:1 red lights 1 RLOD
E-Code / Secondary Error code:E73 / 1021
Binary/Hex:01001001 / 0x49 -> 73
Known fixes:

1) Southbridge X-Clamp-Fix
2) Reflow the Southbridge/Ethernet chip area
3) Check the area under the Southbridge for parts that might have fallen off and solder them back on.
4) In rare cases it can also be GPU related so an X-Clamp Fix might work as well (bigart666)

Description:

This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the Southbridge or the ethernet chip.In rare cases it can also be triggered by a cold joint under the GPU on one of the lines that run to the Southbridge chip.
And missing parts(caps, resistors...) under the Southbridge can trigger this error as well.

I have had E73 many times on my Falcon Revision 1 board. Each time I let it
overheat then put pressure on the small Ethernet chip at the back left of the
console, just above the south-bridge. As with all XBox error's it can be a
million things but for me it was pressure on the Ethernet chip.

Hi all I have fixed my e73 by x-clamp fix. The trick is to just apply the right
pressure on the gpu its trail and error.I have drilled holes through my case so
i can adjust the heat-sink without oping. Too much pressure and e73 not enough
and overheat. Worked like a charm.

definately not a ethernet error.. its a video error gpu a ana or southbridge...

Successfully repaired by reflowing Southbridge with ZT-7 station @ 250C on
display.

I bought a refurbished xbox 360 falcon motherboard and when i opened it up it
looked like the person who refurbished it rerouted the direction of some
electricty to another resistor/capacitor. on the motherboard it was marked e73
so i assume it had the e73 error. so if u lost one of the resistors and dont
have any extras i will take a picture to show u what he did

In some cases a defective AV-cable can cause the E73 error.

ATTENTION: We repair hundreds of consoles.. We recently found an E73 1021, took
it apart, only to find broken chips under the CPU because the customer tried
fixing it themselves,

therefore the board is JUNK and they get to buy a new xbox
:)

so this error isnt always just a reflow fix, it can mean MISSING CHIPS

Hey guys,
Lots of good info on here.. I got the E73 error on my box so I took the mother
board out to inspect it and found that two of the little (micro) caps have come
loose from the bottom of the larger processor (CPU?). I had to use a magnifying
glass to see what was going on and tried to handle the loose caps but they are
so small it's nearly impossible! Is this board junk now, what can I do?

on 2010-11-30 02:19:45 :

@bigart666 Yeah did the same thing and it worked after letting it overheat. I
did the x clamp fix and still got the error so that doesn't mean its the
GPU. The Southbridge X-clamp-fix is what u need to do.

The proper way to Reflow the GPU HANA CPU is by using a BGA Rework Station this
uses Infrared and covers the whole area unlike a heatgun. I have Repaired a ton
of the E73 Error on Consoles along with E74 Error simply by using a BGA Rework
Station to do a Reflow then doing the X Clamp fix! $24-$30 Heatgun compared to a
$800-$1900 BGA Rework Station!

Reflowed the GPU twice on this one before I noticed that someone had managed to
knock a cap off the top of the CPU. Waste of time. This will go back to the
customer who'll probably put it back on FLeBay where I expect it came from
in the first place!

E73 error is also caused by missing capacitors on the CPU. Be sure to check them
as well. Most people aren’t going to notice they are missing.

it is the gpu i had one just messing around stuck 2 q-tips 1 in each fan let it
overheat boom it worked so im off to reflow the gpu

i had a e74 error and did the heatgun reflow. now i got the e73 error 1021
error. what can i do? any ideas? why i got e74 then e73?

I got this E73/1021 error, I did a DIY adv. hybrid on just the GPU. Found
component video still wouldn't display anything, HDMI & VGA would show
E73 error onscreen. Overheated it with fan on CPU for 8 minutes (felt hot
enough), left it cool for about an hour, tried it and it worked! But only showed
logo and never went to dash (image kept moving tho) and colour + syncing was
off.

Tightened the mobo screws in EVENLY and gently, powered it back on and got green
lights before a crystal clear dashboard!

Then I checked Kernel and it's an exploitable Jasper! :D

Good luck!!

Summary: it's defo GPU related in my opinion!! Also, I found 2 tooth picks
inside this unopened box! :D

Having a hard time with this ec. reflowed gpu, cpu, hana, southbridge...still
nothing but e73. my setup is Presto griddle as preheater with Saike 852d+ hot
air reflow station. I am builind a reflow oven to see if that will help.

on 2010-06-09 04:21:59 :

I have repaired 4 out of the 7 E73 Units that have been brought to me for repair
by reflowing just the GPU with an Aoyue 968 and an Ownta T-8280 as my preheater.
I have not tried reflowing the Southbridge so I can't be certain if that
works or not. I am pretty sure a heatgun/griddle can get the job done as well.

on 2010-06-08 23:57:27 :

This EC is a toufy! I recommend the x clamp fix first and if that isn't
helpful try reflowing the southbridge hana area. And even if that doesn't
work... put back the x clamps and put it together and boom you're screwd!
