Details for Error code E74/1022

Cold solder joint under GPU- (H)ANA

1 red lights

Details
Primary Error code:1 red lights 1 RLOD
E-Code / Secondary Error code:E74 / 1022
Binary/Hex:01001010 / 0x4A -> 74
Known fixes:

1)If you soldered anything to the mainboard before it occured, whatever you are powering from this point is drawing too much power so get rid of it.Also get rid of everything that you can see that might bridge anything near the GPU.
2) X-Clamp replacement Hybrid - Tighten the GPU screws facing the HANA chip slightly more and make sure to be using a shim. Adding an extra shim on each side of the smaller chip dye will help to create more surface against the heatsink and will increase the chances of the error going away for good.
3) If there is a lot of flexing under the GPU, bake the board to unflex it
4) Reflowing GPU and HANA chip

Related Errors:
Powered by X-EX.com
0022
Description:

This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between.
Mostly it is one of the outer solder balls on the side facing the (H)ANA chip so a shim increases the chanced of success quite a bit.
Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the (H)ANA chip.

I have fixed about 5 360s prior to today all by reflowing either gpu or cpu that
I received RRoD. Today a friend brought me one with E74 on screen and instead
reflowed the HANA chip and solved the problem. I use hot air rework station and
a flat griddle, thermocouple, kapton heat tape, and no clean liquid flux, and
use arctic silver 5 for heat sink grease.
Before getting the board ready to reflow remove the two caps near the HANA chip
they are too close to being in the way to try to shield. If not they could blow
while reflowing. At work I use Hakko desoldering gun but at home I have a Radio
Shack desolering iron and it works fine for home use.

opened up my x box and it looks like the heatsink leaked oil on my board. could
i just clean it away or ill need a new heatsink?

Got this on an HDMI unit, replaced X-clamps with bolts and nylon washers, and it
works. Guess I was lucky?

Just reflowed my falcon elite with E74, got green lights ;)

To those with reoccurring E74's it is most likley the EDRAM chip on the
gpu is dead, meaning the only permanent fix is replacing the gpu

As for my elite, i will probably replace the gpu in the long run, got a new one
ordered but am still waiting for it...

check this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3QYIkVT2lI for a possible fix
:D

My situation:

i used 11 pennies, i had previously X-Clamp fixed the console in a repair
attempt (came out of a bulk lot of rrod xbox's i got to fix aand re-sell)
and that didn't work tried the heatgun fix and it worked for a bit longer
but E74'd again then i saw this and hey presto its been working past 9
hours straight :D back up and playing BO2 :D as my poor xenon recently gave up
on me :( but at least i've scored a Falcon out of it :D

ok i have an xbox non hdmi built 07 that had this code e74 (1022) i reflowed the
board (ANA, RAM, SB, CPU, GPU) i then put it all back together and fired it up
and it was still 3 light so i ran error code a few times and got inconsistent
and rather odd codes back (0000000000000000 was a code i got 0000001 was the
second time) i took it apart again and i noticed what looked like one of the
smaller capacitors was sitting in the chassis i looked on the board and its hard
to locate exactly where it came from any help?

knowere lines came in the screen then i shut it off and tried turning it back on
an got the code, i tried reflow and oven back and nothing, was getting rrod and
1020 but i fixed it but theirs a silver connector next to the ana chip that came
of so i glued it and it works but it turns on now, with out it didnt turn on, so
any suggestions for this, or is it dead??

Ok so I bought a 360 (older model) for 100 bucks locally and it was working fine
then suddenly had one red light (error E-74) after hours and his of reading and
watching a shit ton of videos I finally got brave enough to open the box up to
familiarize my self with anything before trying any repairs. Then I remember the
guy who sold it to me said there was new thermal paste. At that point I had no
idea what it meant but after tearing it apart I could tell that the xclamp
repair had been done so I tightened up the screws there and after a little
tinkering got itworking again. Played a game for about 15 mins, turned it off
and when I power back on, e74 is back. What do I need to do to permanently get
this error away?

im having great sucsess with a new dry reflow process, whilst its not
recommended i have now brought back 4 boards with errors 0020,1022x2 and 0102
these were all dead boards that had been reballed and id wrote off but now
theyve a new lease of life, im not saying this is perfect or recommended but i
will continue to test and post my results.

on 2012-01-04 22:26:18 :

Tips from Brian the "PC GUY":
Disassemble the whole thing
reflow GPU and HANA using the T-862 infrared rework station
and use gel flux melt it with a heat gun so that it soaks into the chips.
Don't let it get above 200 degrees Celsius, so you will also need a
thermocoupler and insulation tape to tape it to the chip. I let it ride at
about 190 Celsius and it does the trick.
Use 1 M5 steel washer and 2 #10 nylons for each M5 .80 x 10 screw, so that the
nylons touch the board and the steel makes contact with the heat sink.

onthemark11 your kind off answering your own question pal, lol, you should
always try and supplie the bulck of heat from underneath the board (preheater)
then supply the rest from an hot air gun or what ever your using from the top to
concentrate on a specific area to make the reflow work the solder must get to a
temp where it becomes `loose` so you could reflow any chip on the board and as
many as you want but doing one at a time but in the same session if that makes
sense?? in fairness pal the majority of the time im having to reball anyway so
now i reball first!! lol. sorry about my spelling!

on 2011-10-19 04:01:24 :

I have a legit rework station. So my question is can I just flux the HANA and
GPU for a 1022 error and focus the nozzle on the GPU and have the HANA reflow
with the GPU? Or do I have to do 2 separate reflows: one focusing on the GPU and
one focusing on the HANA? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

ive two machines with this one was an old one and had the typical xclamp fix
nylon/metal washers ect.. it had red ringed again so i applied pressure to the
ana chip and it came on so redid the fix with arctic 5 and is now running i
will post its progress. the other is an elite tryed my luck but now it is error
0110 any solutions i find i will post if i can help anyone i will pm me if you
need to.

on 2011-08-09 05:09:22 :

I took off the xclamps, cleaned up the thermal paste already on there, added
some artic 5, used the nylon and steel screw method, "baked" it, and
it still says E74 . . . Any suggestions??

on 2011-08-05 04:28:47 :

Successfully repaired by reballing H(ANA) chip with ZT-7 rework station @ 250C
on display.

on 2011-04-15 23:24:45 :

guys i fixed my e74 with just replacing the xclamp with m5 screws with
washers(zinc, plastic) it works fine, but now i realized that in certain games
like MW2 and the force unleashed im noticing a somewhat blurry sky in certain
areas? idk maybe another GPU error? should i reflow the GPU?

on 2011-01-15 02:12:03 :

awesome. did exactly what you said tightened down at the hanna chip. little time
and patients and quarter turns. lol

forget my last comment.. i read things wrong.. i get it now..lol

on 2010-12-28 07:33:11 :

so for the oven bake.. if its done at 150f do i still need to have all the
insulation or can i just do it bare?

on 2010-10-18 21:32:21 :

@ josegp

I can only agree to that statement. The SB isn't the problem. I played mw2
for 7 minutes before it started showing graphical problems (obviously a problem
to do with the GPU). I switched the xb off and on again... and what does it
show? E74 again... I will try the oven trick and if that alone doesn't
work i'll try it with the Hybrid Uniclamp. Hope it'll work

not SB issue, pressure on that made it work for 1 minute, then it would
overheat. NOT SB RELATED

on 2010-08-05 12:52:14 :

I had this error last night. Issue with southbridge needing pressure. Guess i
have to order a SB plate to perm fix it. I kept changing the screw
tightness/looseness, extra shims on the smaller gpu, everything but bake the
board and reflow. Figured i would try southbridge... viola! no longer 1022!!!

on 2010-07-30 00:57:59 :

I'm convinced this is definitely a short under the GPU, was towards the
CPU side for me on one box, and that's where the heat would start. I tried
over heating it (it was a Jtag - now just runs Linux/Xell, was for the bin
otherwise) and I got it to work for a few brief minutes. Started E74ing again
overheated once more and came back to life briefly. This was the 1st time I
tried it and was by accident (using it for power while flashing a drive) but I
will just save for a reball in future!

Summary, either tin whiskers or broken connection. On this box a fan stopped
working, so you can guess what happened on the inside..

on 2010-06-09 04:03:54 :

...using a heatgun/griddle, just make sure you heat the chip up slowly until you
hit 217-222 and try to hold this temp as best as you can for 12-15 seconds.

I hope my Input Helps, GOOD LUCK

on 2010-06-09 04:03:32 :

I Repair about 15-20 a week, and about 25-30% of the repairs that come in have
E74 Error. For my preheater I use the Ownta T-8280, and I use the Aoyue 968 as
my Reflow Station. I have only had maybe 2 or 3 E74 Errors that I wasn't
able to repair out of the 100 or so E74s that I have come across. I only reflow
the GPU and not the ANA Chip. Just letting you guys know that from my personal
experience, the ANA chip is normally not what causes the E74 error, it is the
solder point(s) underneath the GPU which connect to the ANA chip that need to be
reflowed. I also have the same success with 0110 even though most people on
here are saying that involves the RAM bricks. My setup costs $400-450, but I am
sure you can get these repaired...

on 2010-05-22 13:17:09 :

i found out its the ana chip alot of times...so to fix this problem try reflow
first and if that doesnt work i found out to heat up the ana chip a little bit
and then put liquid solder flux around it and then add even pressure to the chip
and at the same time heat the edge's up of the chip till u see the flux
bubbling out and then stop heating, but keep the pressure on the chip as it cools
down, the flux will reconnect any broken joints...it may work the first time or u
might have to repeat the process..u can also do this to the gpu..add the flux to
the slots so flux runs behind the chip and finish with ur reflow...done this to
many boxes and have like a 90% fix rate....hope this helps who ever

xbox-experts.com/tutorial/the-ultimate-xbox-360-oven-reflow-tutorial/

Anybody who has this error and the hybrid fix did not work when you setted it up
on your xbox, USE THIS!

I was kind of worried about putting my xbox in an oven because I did not own a
heatgun but wow. the oven reflow up top really works. No BS.

Oh and yah to the people below, I would take off the foam shims too because they
are not made to withstand any oven's temperature.

But yah do the oven reflow up top with ALL the insulation and then put on that
freaking awesome hybrid fix from this site and your xbox will work once again.

Gears of War 3!!! it is gonna kick soo much ass!

on 2010-04-24 06:35:24 :

so it blew up?

on 2010-03-11 01:10:42 :

low oven bake 4-8 hours also hybrid kit shim under gpu all i got to say after
that is BOOM!!!!
