Bridged solderjoint/Short - CPU/GPU/RAM

3 red lights

Details
Primary Error code:3 red lights 3 RLOD
E-Code / Secondary Error code:E08 (No Audio/Video) / 0020
Binary/Hex:00001000 / 0x08 -> 8
Known fixes:

1)If you worked on the mainboard recently(soldered or so) remove these wires because you might be drawing too much power from the GPU
Also look for missing/bridged components like capacitors/resistors
2) If you jtagged the console remove wires and resistors, the parallel port can stay as long as no PC is connected.
3) X-Clamp replacement
4) Flush with alcohol, let dry, begin Relow with flux like below
5) Reflow GPU (and RAM if this fails) area
6) Reball the GPU and RAM, for bridged solder

Description:

This error is caused by a bridged solder joint under CPU, GPU or one of the RAM bricks.
This effect can also be caused by tin whiskers leading to shorts and if the GPU was taken off the mainboard this error will also show up.
It can also be power related(the CPU/GPU or RAM isnt getting enough power). Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing and bridged parts near the GPU.
If the console was jtagged and the resistors and cables are still connected it will show 0020, the parallel port can stay as long as no PC is connected.

Don't do the stupid bold-mod! It might light up green... until it gets hot
and the board cannot move and the solder will crack and you will end up here
again. Reflow/Reball to fix this error.

Reflowed GPU on a Xenon 2006 - 0020 fixed so far.

Do it properly and it might last. Don't do it half-assed or it won't
work.

on 2013-08-04 06:53:32 :

Just repaired a 0020 by replacing the GPU.
I tried reflowing the ram and old GPU, but it did nothing.. Then I replaced the
old GPU with a working refurbished one and bam, all green! :)

So if a ram and gpu reflow does not work, replace the gpu. (because The old gpu
is likely dead)

on 2013-07-23 18:06:43 :

Just fixed 2 of these in a row. reflowed the GPU and all RAM Bricks with flux..
I reflowed them all first before I tested it, just to save time.

do not use jenky ass penny guys it won't work and if it does lol it will
only work for a bit before the dreaded error code will return. i can't
even tell you how many time i have taken console's apart and i found
penny's in there on the ram chips and let me tell you it is a JOKE!

on 2013-04-28 05:37:40 :

just re-flowed the ram top n bottom and still no change! goooooooood luck! like
i said!!!

on 2013-04-28 02:13:41 :

I have re-balled the gpu and ram blocks and replaced three burnt capacitors at
c3f2,c5c4,& c6c1! wtf?! this pee-non board is going in the parts pile! I
have actually repaired this error with a re-flow only of the cpu and gpu but
seriously...Have fun with this error! Sorry i can't offer any other info!

Hi, what a great web blog. I usually spend hours on the net reading blogs on
various subjects. And, I really would like to praise you for writing such a
fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that
only very few posses and yes you got it. This is really informative and I will
for sure refer my friends the same. Thanks.

the resolution to my comment below was to loosen the screws on the GPU. but i
still do not have any AV output, i also tried to reset the video but that didnt
work. I guess its going in the trash since i dont have time to piss around with
a re-ball.

on 2013-01-06 05:01:00 :

My console didnt have any AV output so i did a couple reflows, no luck. then i
decided to do a x-clamp mod by drilling holes in the bottom of the case, then i
got 0020. idk whats wrong, any help would be nice

on xbox360 slim , error 0020 appears when CGPU is removed , tested it my self

on 2012-10-02 09:36:40 :

Fixed my Zephyr HDMI with pressure on the HANA (Thanks to spungebob187's
comment). So 0020 on a HDMI model is most likely the HANA coming loose. Penny
fix for the HANA is a good way to go for me.

on 2012-06-06 07:03:43 :

0020 or no video alternately - reflow CPU

on 2012-04-15 00:25:48 :

i think i got this 1 figured out. I checked over 3 boards with this error. It
looks that hardware is flat out not connected totally. 2 of the boards i
checked out the GPU is almost completely disconnected. The last board seems the
ana chip is not connected. I actually used a wrist watch repair workbench and i
could zoom in so close i could read the numbers on each chip.

i had a xenon today with this error code and tried a dry re-flow (not always
recommended) of the whole board pre-heated to about 110 then added heat from 968
concentrated on ram/gpu area then wafted a heat gun around the rest of the board
from a distance never taking the board past 149 ive had alot of sucsess with
this method as a last resort as i dont like the oven bake also i call it a dry
reflow as i first tried it whith no flux.

on 2012-02-14 14:41:40 :

I own a repair company in MN and have repaired literally almost 2000 Xbox 360
red light issues.
I have found that any HDMI model with the 0020 error is 99% of the time a cold
solder joint under the HANA chip. If the lights take a about one second to show
from power on it is the HANA, about 3 seconds until the lights show and it will
be a RAM brick(most likely one of the two under the heatsink). Xenon models do
not have the HANA chip so in most cases 0020 is the RAM brick and in rare cases
can be cold or bridged solder under the GPU.

I ran an old toothbrush gently over the tiny chips with dust build up, and
cleaned up everything else. I installed the penny fix. Runs like a champ.

on 2012-01-08 13:14:10 :

I fixed it by reflowing, RAM Chips and GPU!
BAM it boots up quick, and works great again!

on 2011-12-14 01:03:33 :

for the guy with penny thing you might wana buy the things that normally came
with xbox 360. idk what their called...

on 2011-12-14 01:01:57 :

ok guys i think its going to be what they said about one of the gpu or cpu not
making good contact with the chip. i had to press down on it a certain way and
then it worked . (I changed the thermal paste by the way before an it was still
doing same error till i tried pressing down on it.)

This error code is a hassle though good luck people ...

on 2011-07-18 08:23:56 :

can be caused also by a wrong gpu installed (xenon GPU on a falcon board)

on 2011-07-10 23:50:03 :

got this error after replacing the network chip on a box that would not read
that it had a network cable plugged in to it

on 2011-05-17 17:43:22 :

here's how i fixed mine, first i applied pressure on the south bridge,
nothing happened, then i disconnected the drive and applied pressure again,
nothing happened, then disconnected power and applied pressure...voila, then put
the drive back on and BAM! again, then i replaced drives...nothing, then i
replaced the sata cable and so far so good.

on 2011-03-20 15:30:11 :

my old xenon xbox finally gave me the 3 rrod 0020 error,so i used a heat gun on
it and its now back to life and running smothely. :)

p.s
since i fixed mine i have now brought 2 more xenon (0020) back to life

I was pushing down on the different chips with my fingers while powering the
unit on. I found that my problem is with the hana chip. Gave it a little
pressure with my thumb and it fired right up. Anyone know of a good way to fix
it besides reflowing? I am kind of intimidated by that process especially since
I dont have any proper tools for that.

happened when i was doing a mod in a liteon 74850c. It was a short in a cutted
track. Now it's all ok.

on 2010-11-30 04:54:31 :

Any thoughts? She was working tip-top, no graphics issues and then at the 45
min. mark it was like...1 second of green bars and then auto cut-off. Is it
possible that the unit loosened-up with heat and I just need to tighten up the
heat sinik screws? Also, if I don't do anything can I expect depreciating
game-time? Sorry for the thesis, but I appreciate any feedback you guys can
offer.

on 2010-11-30 04:45:46 :

Older unit been using it for the last two years in Caribbean (can u say
humid?). Began locking-up and graphics issues culminating in 0102. While in 3rd
world performed a real hack job replacing the x-clamps (didn't have stuff
and made washers using abalone guitar picks). Got about 4 hours of play out of
it but then that was it.

Now back in the US, serious about the fix. Did a hybrid and the secondary
changed from 0102 to a 0020. Read more (great info on this site guys, keep it
up) and did a low-temp oven bake. Debated doing a flux flush and oven reflow or
heat gun but decided to put her back 2-gether and giver a go. Got 45 min. and
then 2rod shutdown.

She rebooted fine after a little rest but thinking Flux and reflow? thx!

on 2010-11-29 16:52:25 :

This error also comes when there is a short on dvd board like a bad trace
soldering on LiteOn drive. I saw 0021 from a damaged LiteON PCB from screw
over-tightening while the PCB was misaligned.

on 2010-11-10 02:37:43 :

Can also just be some dust buildup in your 360, just blow it out and clean it.
I've had this in some cases, so it's not an oddity.

on 2010-08-11 05:40:44 :

So first do the xClapmFix and if it still doesn't work - on the tutorial i
saw you had to put 2 washes on each bolt on the upper side of the motherboard,
so if yours is the same remove 1 from each bolt only from the ones that hold the
GPU cooler thingy and screw it real tight ( sorry for my bad english - i'm
bulgarian after all :D:D )

on 2010-06-30 01:28:50 :

If it is a natural 0020 it is tin whiskers in most cases thats why
overheating(DONT DO THAT) or reflowing the solder balls fixes it.
The tin whiskers are just ultrathin antennas so when they get hot the top parts
break off or if they actually reflow they will be sucked up by the solder..

on 2010-06-09 04:11:50 :

I do not believe this 0020 Error code is a bridged solder joint because I repair
these all the time. Usually a bridged solder joint involves luck to get
repaired using a reflow station instead of using reballing equipment. 0020 is
most likely caused by a cold solderjoint underneath the GPU that can be repaired
with a heatgun/griddle.

on 2010-05-18 07:40:04 :

I successfully relieved a twentied console last week. Initially I found I could
get it to boot with additional pressure on the GOU heatsink but only toward the
CPU heatsink. I did the xclamp mod on GPU side only and tightened the hell out
of the GPU heatsink, like as hard as I could with my hands alone, and voila! It
has worked like a charm ever since.

on 2010-04-24 07:23:21 :

I got this error after doing a reflow for a 0102 error. has hybrid xclamp on it.
I loosened the screws a little and it works fine now. I think it was just a
short caused by the heatsink

on 2010-02-12 19:28:48 :

I have resolve this Problem ( 0020 ) semply replace the IC regulator IC Q2G1 (
near Eject switch ) becasue is "open and loss". Try It! Work!!! (
sorry for my Bad English I'am Italian ) ;)

on 2010-02-11 02:16:48 :

i fixed one today 0020 flush chips with alcohol griddle underneath heatgun low
380(f) 3 minutes then high 480(f) 500(f) 2 minutes let cool hybrid bam works

on 2010-02-01 07:48:21 :

the worst error ever!
